PERSONALITY TYPE AND MOTIVATION - MOTIVATION CHAPTER 6

What you need to be motivated is determined by your qualities and by your personality type. To determine your type, the Myers-Briggs-Type Indicator instrument is very useful. For example, there is a big difference in motivation between extraverted types and introverted types. They need different tasks and a different environment to work fine.

Myers-Briggs-Type-Indicator

This tool tells you where your preferences lie on four behavioral dimensions. You can find them here in English because the abbreviations for the personality types are also often given in English:

3- How do you choose and on the basis of which do you make decisions ? T hinking - F eeling
4- How do you want to control the environment? J udging - P erceiving

A choice from each of these four dimensions yields sixteen different types. These are four different abbreviations. The abbreviation starts with an E or an I. For the first letter of your personality type, it is here because it determines how you are motivated.

Extrovert or Introvert?

Some people know immediately whether they are an E'tje or an I. At the prospect of the Friday afternoon drinks they already half their clothes to run to the cafe: an extravert. At the view of a day of quiet work at home, the laptop is already wrapped up: an introvert.

Which column would suit you best? Do you belong to the approximately 65% ‚Äč‚Äčextraverts or the 35% introverts? For the sake of clarity: an introvert is not a kind of autist that you only have to put in a room and only have to give water once in a while. They just have friends and sometimes go outside. However, among computer nerds the percentage I 'is a lot higher.

You often see that E'tjes have a preference for a generalist function in which they have a lot of variety. Introverts are usually seen in a specialist job. If you try to push an I into tasks where he has to talk a lot, make quick decisions and switch quickly , chances are you will demotivate him. He can do it, but it eats energy.

Coordinate work environment

Put an E with others in a room, give him a lot of attention, let him pause a lot. An E often hangs around the office for more than eight hours and works in short spurs. He must constantly recharge himself by chatting at the coffee machine or walking around the department. Keep meetings short and let him blow off steam at the beginning. There is no point in forcing an E to keep his mouth shut.

Take a look at your task and your work environment yourself. Is the alignment optimal for you? Also look at your colleagues. E or I? Can you motivate them by tuning your behavior to their preference?

There is much more to do with MBTI. You can imagine that the other preferences on the behavioral dimensions also influence the motivation. The more you let someone work within his own preferences, the more he can tailor his own goals and actions to his needs, the quicker he will achieve a better result.
