Listening to a presentation is an attack on the audience for the public. Holding the attention is the key to conveying your message. You do this by varying your speaking, alternating ordinary information with stories and examples. These stories and examples make it easier for the public to keep following your story. You also have the opportunity to convey something of your passion and enthusiasm to the public. You make it personal and take it for you! Even more important is that if you have the attention of the public you can show the importance of your presentation to them . If you know how to make the audience involved in your presentation, they will also be able to keep your attention focused on your story.

An image says more than 1000 words. This is right. People learn and remember better when a chat is accompanied by images. The visual and verbal material is processed through different channels. The brains are thus stimulated from multiple sides and are better able to make themselves a structure of the presentation. Do not overdo it with images: one can only pay attention to a few pieces of information at the same time. The image must clarify and / or represent your accompanying story. If not, do not use it. Keep the image, as well as the structure of your chat, simple and clear.

Powerpoint can be used for images. However, this is done little. What does one do? Bulletpointed text with summaries of the presentation! Never use powerpoint and never for textual summaries!The most stupid thing is the use of summary slides that are read out aloud! It is incomprehensible that this happens so often. Where images make a clear contribution to memorizing and organizing information, text does not do this at all. People remember better when words are told to them than when they have to read them. If they have to read along and the same thing is also told, they do not know where to focus and attention irrevocably wanders off. It is as if they have two voices in their heads, one voice from the presenter and their own voice that reads in itself. Even if they say the same thing, listening to two people is not pleasant and does not promote concentration. The presenter may find it nice to have a moment of rest, but the audience irrevocably wanders off.

Story and image works much better than story, image and text.

Can not use your text at all anymore? In any case, not sentences. Exception is a quote or a definition that is important. As soon as you start using bullets, you are sure that you are on the wrong track. Text on slides can be used when displaying a structure, but even then it should be about key words. The presenter should never say exactly the same as what is displayed on the slide. He says more. The slide is supportive. You can check yourself: the powerpoint you created for your presentation must be unusable without you. If you can use your powerpoint as a handout, then you have powerpoint to work against you instead of for you.

Michel is now panicking. He has a lot of information to convey and would like to put all that information on slides. At least he knows for sure that people will see and know everything. Mass, Michel! People will remember so much less. What he can do much better is to announce in his introduction that a handout is available afterthe lecture with all the information on it. Michel will have to make this handout separately. He drafts these in written language and will contain more information than the presentation itself. This way Michel is sure that everyone has all the information and can use his presentation to convey the most important points of his message. His audience will also be comfortable with the announcement of the handout after the presentation and can fully focus on what Michel is going to say. Remember: Michael's main task is not to merely transmit information. Michel will try to involve the staff in the new policy, explain the main lines and the how and why and he has a direct survey of the feelings among the staff.

You insert a slide at the moment that you start speaking about the subject that the slide belongs to. If the subject is over and it is not yet time for the next slide, put powerpoint on black. The best thing is, to do this during a black slide Then, when switching on, the attention does not jump back to the previous slide. All slides should have a supportive effect on what you say. You never have to look at the projected slides yourself, you can occasionally piss on the laptop or play the right slide. A good illustration for the use of slides is the news. When do you look at images and when only at the news reader? How do they give tickets,

The use of films or sound interviews can be very useful and pleasant for the public. Here too it applies: it must contribute to your message. If not, do not start. During a video there is a moment of relaxation and a moment of variation for the public. Put the movie on from powerpoint and do not start with another medium. This takes too long and distracts too much.

For the slides themselves, the use of color, the font and the type of pictures are important. Make sure that the colors you use are clearly visible. Complementary colors work well, with the cool color in the background and the warm color in the foreground. Color also gives atmosphere. Whichever colors you choose as foreground and background color: keep it there. Each slide has a different layout. The same applies to the font. A sans serif letter, not too small. Good to use are Arial, Helvetica or Gill. The images and graphs you use must be of good quality. Sharp, beautiful and clearly visible. Pictures of people always work well. People like to watch people. Do not use poor quality clip art or photos.

Animation use can be very useful. Bas could explain his latest application with an animated representation of the information flow of his tool. Animated bullets are often annoying, as are sound effects. Animations that take time and do not contribute anything (such as making bullets rotate and fly in) do not use them.

Do not stuff the slides. A single word and a picture works better than 10 images, a graph and everywhere logos. Keep it simple and beautiful.

During the presentation it is useful to have a remote control to go to the next slide.

=> Powerpoint is not obligatory!

Exercises: Powerpoint

- View the journal and see how they use visual aids. When do they deploy them? When do they use lists? How do they use repetition? How long do you look at a speaking face? View the journal a number of times. The more often you look, the more things you notice. Also check out a journal from another country or another channel.
- Search the internet for color schemes and free stock photography.
- Make slides with your presentation. Make sure the slides represent and support your story. Make use of images of people, simple graphs, videos. Be critical of whether it really contributes, otherwise you will make a black slide.
