7 Competencies That are Important for the Future

You've probably heard that your job security is greater in the IT or engineering industry. But if these industries don't suit you, it doesn't mean robots will take your job. The other professional fields won't disappear, but they'll certainly change. This's partly due to digitization and automation. There are certain competencies that you can develop or improve that are important in the changing labor market. Prepare for the future in an industry or position that suits you well by learning one of these seven skills.

7 Competencies That are Important for the Future

1. Flexibility

Because so much is changing in the world and everything is changing so fast, it's important to be flexible. With a large dose of flexibility, you're able to adapt to the changing world. A new administrative system? No problem, you adapt and sink your teeth into it. Scrum, lean, agile, kanban, etc? Or something different every six months? This doesn't matter for flexible employees and the employer is happy with that.

2. Digital communication

You can't get around it: digitization. More and more communication is going through digital channels, also at work. That's why it pays to delve into this and to ensure that you understand the different channels. Slack, Jira, Skype, Hangouts: nowadays there are dozens of online channels with which you communicate in the office, but also with a customer or with a supplier.

3. Analytical thinking / data driven working

The concept of 'data' is becoming increasingly important and more and more companies are collecting data. With an analytical mind you're able to interpret this data and use it for new projects. More and more companies are asking for employees who can solve problems using data.

4. Critical thinking

Accompanied by analytical thinking, critical thinking is involved. If you're able to compare certain issues and look at them critically, you're in. Robots can supply data and perform calculations, but lack a critical view of the results.

5. Social skills

Many companies find their employees in more places than just in the region. Dozens of people from different cultures work at international companies. This makes it sometimes difficult to work together, because someone from outside communicates in a completely different way than a local person. The better you can deal with this, the better you'll fit in an international environment.

6. Leadership (people management)

People don't disappear and people need to be managed, to a greater or lesser degree. Although the management role will probably move more towards a coaching role, robots cannot. If you learn leadership skills, you can be sure that there's a place for you in the job market of the future.

7. Multidisciplinary working

More and more companies are choosing to let employees from different disciplines work together. In this way, projects can be tackled faster, because specialists jointly look at a problem. It's therefore important that you can work together with colleagues from various departments.
